Fish oils are a general term for oils that come from a wide variety of fish. Obviously some oils are better than others; this depends on the source of the oil, which determines the Omega-3 fatty acid (active ingredient) content. The greater the Omega-3 fatty acid content the better the product.

Bio-marine Plus contains 70% Omega-3 fatty acids as EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid), vitamin B12 and folic acid. These work within the body's metabolism as precursors for the beneficial type 3 prostaglandins and type 5 leukotrienes. Unlike many other products available that contain triglycerides, Bio-Marine Plus provides fatty acids in the 'free' form, which means they can be absorbed directly by the digestive system, therefore giving greater benefit.

Fish oil supplements have been used to treat a variety of disorders. Their primary use is in helping to maintain a healthy heart and circulation. Fish oils have also been shown to reduce the levels of fat in the bloodstream, and help with conditions such as arthritis, psoriasis, migraines and eczema.

Taking 2 capsules of Bio-Marine Plus (equivalent to 700 mg Omega-3 fatty acids) per day is recommended for general well being, and 4 capsules (equivalent to 1400 mg) per day has been shown to give therapeutic benefit.

There are many fish oil preparations on the market, however Bio-Marine Plus contains 500mg of pure fish oil, with Omega-3 fatty acid content of 70% (35% EPA, 25% DHA and 10% other). It contains a much higher purity and fatty acid content than preparations based on cod liver oil, which typically contain 25-45% Omega-3 fatty acids.

There are many scientific papers that show the beneficial effects of fish oil preparations, particularly in reducing blood cholesterol and maintaining a healthy heart. There are no known drug interactions or contra-indications for omega-3 fatty acids.
